Staying neutral

sweater & jacket: Zara (old) (similar options under $100 here & here) | pants: True Religion | belt: Hermes | shoes: Chanel (similar, similar) | scarf: F21 | bracelets: DY (7mm in onyx & pearl)

I brought my car in for service yesterday, nothing major, just an oil change and tire rotation. After 30 minutes of waiting, the service guy came and said I needed a new air and cabin filter and that it would be $120 for both. I said okay without thinking twice. If he said I needed it, I must, right? Later that day Darren tells me I paid too much. The filters are roughly $9 each and can be changed in about 5 minutes. Why didn't I think to call him while I was there?! So dumb. This is the last time I'm going to get my car serviced alone.

  3. That happens to me too! I hate that.. that's why I refuse to go in by myself now. I told Hubs he has to be there because obviously I don't know anything what my car needs. >.<

I love the neutrals of your outfit! Dying over your Chanel flats!! Want them! lol

  8. Your makeup looks great. can you do a post on fave makeup items and how you do your face? you always look flawless! And regarding getting overcharged... I've always wondered if people try to take advantage of you bc they see you wearing designer brands and think you can afford it anyway. I never really wear recognizable name brands when going for any type of service. :)

  10. Auto service industry does not discrimate. You can go in wearing rag and they still give you the same sales pitch. I am default to say " NO". Female is easily falling prey because we are less mechanically savvy. Knowledge is power. I learn from my mistake. Mechanics and sales person are not you friends.

Love Love the neutral touch. Love Love your Chanel ballet flat. Never see a " MISS " on you yet. I agreed with Jayne, time to give us a tutorial on achieving those beautiful eyes.

  14. I hate when car services people take advantage of you. I sometimes to forget to ask my dad for advice also and end up paying more than the service is worth.

Loving your blog by the way. You are adorable and you have a great sense of style! This outfit is just perfect!

  16. Sorry to hear that your trip to the shop didn't go as well.

On a positive note, this is such a simple and chic look! I can always depend on your blog for fun and down to earth style. And even though your taste is different it never looks like you're trying too hard, which is what I like most about your style. Keep up the good work.

    1. It's a look alike! (shameless, I know..) lol. My sister got it online, from which store I'm not sure, but I can ask if you're interested. I like it because it has a stand with multi-angle view.

  24. Hahaha poor girl, I would definitely do the same thing :( thank goodness for understanding men in our lives who know better than to be ripped off for things like this haha! I love the black, camel and white palette of this outfit... my favourite colours as of late! And your make up looks perfect as usual. Tutorial please!

  29. I love this look, esp in the winter! Question for you: Did you dye your hair or is it naturally black like that? My roots are coming in and I'm tired of dying it brown all the time, do you recommend a natural looking black dye that doesn't look too harsh on an Asian? I haven't had a full head of Asian black hair since 2005!

That also happened to me when I get my oil changed, they kept adding more services on and later my dad told me I got ripped off. "Remember they are really just salesmen, always trying to SELL you something. Do research before you buy." I wish I knew more about cars lol.

    1. Panina,

This is my natural color. I used to be blonde up to 5 years ago and when I went back, I did it myself! The change was really drastic because I picked the darkest black one could find. It took about 2 weeks of washing my hair everyday to have the color looking natural. I wouldn't recommend what I did, so you're probably better off consulting your stylist.

  30. I love neutrals so of course adore this look. I still am looking for the perfect camel coat!

That always happens with me at car places - then they give me the stink eye when I call my husband in front of them to ask about pricing. Oh well!

    1. Stink Schmink eye. Try tellin' them you want to see the labor book! :D

They have standard published labor hours for any task so you can see what the breakdown is: recommended time to fix multiplied by their rates. At $100 for ten minutes of work, or whatever they want to quote, they're getting a heck of an hourly rate.

  33. This outfit is sooo gorgeous! I absolutely love the camel coat with the white denim - such a warm & classic look! Ugh, and I always assume if a professional is telling me something, it must be true... always hard to remember that there are people out there who will take advantage! Bummer!

  34. if you look that pretty and girly at the mechanic's, that's what happens! lol $120 for filters, what a joke

  37. Sigh... you mostly pay for labor.

But they also sell you the highest quality parts...at least the good shops! Find a great auto place trust and make sure their Yelp reviews are great and that they don't overcharge. :(

    Sorry this happened!

You look amazing, though. I hope that helps. I really need those shoes.

& ugh to the car people for ripping you off!

  39. Hi Khatu! I'm sorry to hear about you getting duped at the mechanic's. Was it your usual service place? This is why it's important to find a place that you can trust if you don't have much know-how about the costs of car maintenance. It's unfortunate but a good lesson to learn for future reference. :)
